Latvia recognized Lithuania de jure on 12 February 1921.
Latvia recognized the re-established independent State of Lithuania on 23 August 1991.
Diplomatic relations were established on 5 October 1991.
From 1991 to 1993, Chargé d’Affaires Algirdas Žvirėnas served as the first Lithuanian representative to Latvia after the re-establishment of independence (From 1993 to 1995, Algirdas Žvirėnas served as the first Lithuanian Ambassador to Latvia).
From 1990 to 1993, Chargé d’Affaires Alberts Sarkanis served as the first representative of Latvia to Lithuania after the re-establishment of independence (From 1993 to 1996, Alberts Sarkanis served as the first Ambassador of Latvia to Lithuania).
