In case of death
On September 11, 2009 Lithuania joined the Agreement No. 80, October 26, 1973 of the Council of Europe on the transportation of dead bodies. Under this agreement, a special laissez-passer shall be issued by the competent authorities of the State of death.
In this case, neither the State of destination nor the State of transit, insofar as they are Parties to this Agreement, shall require any additional documentation.
This means that if a Lithuanian citizen dies in a foreign country acceding to the Agreement, relatives of the citizen of the Republic of Lithuania no longer need permission to transport the remains to Lithuania, and the Lithuanian Border Guard Service must allow the deceased's body to be imported with a lassez-passer.
