Birštonas is inimitable with its unique, authentic nature and the bends of the Nemunas Loops. It is one of Lithuania’s oldest and most beautiful balneological resorts, famous for its royal origin. The beginning of spa treatment in Birštonas dates back to 1846, so it is the place that has long been endowed with natural resources: gushing mineral water springs, therapeutic mud, clean air and salubrious climate.

The resort prides itself on its mineral water, which is rich in bromine and recognised and valued throughout Europe. Today Birštonas attracts visitors with its modern treatment facilities and sanatoriums “Tulpė”, “Versmė”, “Eglė”, the “Royal Spa Residence” hotel, hospitable hotels, restaurants, active leisure opportunities and memorable events. For more than 30 years now, the resort has hosted the traditional Birštonas International Jazz Festival, which is the oldest of its kind in Lithuania.

The resort is becoming more and more beautiful: the buildings of wooden architecture such as Kurhaus and Birštonas Tourism Information Centre have been restored, the Central Park of the town has been renovated, and bicycle paths have been made. Lovely halls of good acoustics host classical and jazz music concerts as well as art exhibitions.

European assistance funds have been used to arrange public spaces and renovate buildings; parks and squares provide for a cosy shelter; the number of catering, accommodation and active leisure facilities has increased; private investments have been used to revive sanatoriums and treatment facilities which now offer attractive wellness procedures and services. Cosy, modern, hospitable, and still peaceful, Birštonas has become a centre of particular attraction. Last year, taking into account a significant jump in the number of tourists, the town was recognised as the most growing resort in Lithuania.

Now revamped, Birštonas is ready to compete in the international market of tourism and health services; therefore, the special projects currently being implemented focus on the use of mineral water and natural resources for health tourism: there will appear mineral water galleries and the marine climate atmosphere that will only be available in Birštonas. The goal is to position Birštonas as a modern, European-level royal resort.
