A proposal to hold the first joint Lithuania-Latvia governmental meeting
On his working visit to Latvia, the Prime Minister met with Latvian counterpart, Laimduota Straujuma to discuss the intergovernmental cooperation guidelines, bilateral and multilateral meetings to held in Lithuania, energy projects, as well as Latvia's Presidency of the EU Council.
"First of all I would like to note our particularly close cooperation as regards our political relations, trade, joint efforts by our entrepreneurs to look for new niches for investment", said the Prime Minister. According to the Head of Government, the cooperation in the multilateral context is of no less importance. “It is particularly important to pay due attention to our partnership in international organizations. Our solidarity is of utmost importance, more so in the current geopolitical context”, noted the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister informed about the future Baltic Council of Ministers to be held in Lithuania in August, as well as the meeting of the Baltic counterparts in the ceremony marking the completion of the energy projects LitPolLink and NordBalt."We welcome the idea of the Energy Union, and we are taking every effort to eliminate the energy islands: the current projects of Klaipeda liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal can already serve the diversification of the gas market in the region, the electrical interconnection LitPolLink and NordBalt ensure synchronization with the continental European networks", noted the Lithuanian Prime Minister and asked for Latvia’s support in the political dialogue with Poland regarding the construction of the pipeline between Lithuania and Poland (GIPL).
During the meeting, the Prime Minister of Lithuania came up with an idea of organizing the first joint Lithuanian and Latvian governmental meeting in Lithuania. "It will give us an opportunity to discuss important issues as energy, transport, fight against the underground economy, culture, promotion of investment in the region" said the Prime Minister and asked the Prime Minister of Latvia to share the experience as regards the negotiations with the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development.
The meeting agenda also included the discussion of the priorities of the Latvian Presidency of the EU Council. The Lithuanian Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for all the efforts during the challenging period of the presidency, pointing out a great deal of responsibility of the work to be continued by the incoming Luxembourg Presidency.
