Lithuania commits not to conduct destructive direct-ascent anti-satellite missile tests
In December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on all States to pledge not to conduct destructive direct-ascent anti-satellite missile tests (DA-ASAT). Co-sponsored by Lithuania and adopted by a very large majority, the resolution is a milestone in protecting a safe and stable space environment.
Lithuania deems such tests as destabilizing and irresponsible. The destructive testing of DA-ASAT missiles can create large quantities of space debris, making Earth orbit a more dangerous place, and potentially having widespread and irreversible impacts on the space environment. Space has a vital role for global prosperity, development and security. Space systems have become integrated into global infrastructure upon which modern life depends.
Therefore, Lithuania formally pledges not to conduct destructive direct-ascent anti-satellite missile tests.
It wholeheartedly supports this new standard of responsible behaviour and its universalization. Lithuania will continue to work with all willing States to increase trust and transparency between all those involved in space.
