On 26 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius, who attended the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly, held a traditional meeting with leaders and representatives of the world's leading Jewish organizations based in the United States, including the American Jewish Committee, the World Jewish Congress, B'nai B'rith International, the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, the Anti-Defamation League, and others.

The meeting, which took place at the Consulate General of Lithuania in New York, focused on important issues related to historical memory, the Holocaust education, anti-Semitism, restitution, and cultural projects implemented by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. A lot of attention was dedicated to international security and foreign policy issues, such as the situation in Iran, Hezbollah, and the Middle East peace process.

Representatives of Jewish organizations thanked Lithuania’s Foreign Minister for his contribution to the development of friendly relations with Israel and for support within international formats regarding issues of importance to the global Jewish community. In his turn, the Foreign Minister L. Linkevičius invited representatives of influential Jewish organizations to strengthen mutual understanding by implementing cultural and educational projects, funding exchange programs, as well as jointly re-establishing Vilnius as Jerusalem of the North and a popular tourist destination.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister invited distinguished guests to visit Lithuania the following year and to attend events to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the birth of the Vilna Gaon. The year 2020 was designated as the “Year of the Vilna Gaon and the History of the Jews of Lithuania”.
